How I teach

I teach you how to actually play.

Most people learned piano note by note out of a method book with no idea why it mattered. That's not how I teach.

We build real technique from the start: chord voicings, ear training, rhythm, and the ability to sit down at any piano and sound like you know what you're doing. Jazz standards at a jam session, accompanying singers, leading worship, or your favorite songs at home. Every lesson connects to what you want to do with the instrument.

I've spent 18 years playing weddings, cabarets, theater pits, cover bands, jazz combos, and church services. I teach from that, not from a textbook.

What a lesson looks like

Tailored to where you're headed

Warmup

Scales, progressions, or technique for your level. Not busywork: the foundation everything else stands on.

Repertoire

One or two pieces that match your goals. Standards, pop, hymns, classical, whatever you're working toward.

Ear training

Hearing intervals, chord qualities, and song structure. It's what separates players who read from players who listen.

Application

Want to play in a band? We practice like a band. Want to accompany singers? We work on following a voice.

Between lessons

You never leave wondering what to practice.

I ask for 15 to 30 minutes of focused daily practice. In return, you get:

  • An email recap of every lessonWhat we covered, what to work on, with clear goals.
  • Recordings on Google DriveReview exactly what we played, at your own pace.
  • Weekly assignmentsSpecific tempos and targets, not "practice more."
  • Text supportQuick technical questions between sessions.
All levels

Wherever you're starting from

Beginners

Never touched a piano? We build a strong foundation so bad habits never get a chance to hold you back.

Intermediate

You can play but feel stuck. We fill the gaps: theory, voicings, improvisation, and reading.

Advanced and returning

Coming back after years, or pushing toward pro level? Jazz vocabulary, accompaniment, arranging, audition prep.

Kids 8+

Fun and engaging, with real musicianship underneath. A parent or guardian is present for students under 16.

Isaac is as patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging as a piano teacher as he is talented as a pianist. Listening to him play and learning from him are both absolute joys!
